From “The Guardian”: the island of Sardinia, in the Mediterranean Sea, might be what remains of Plato’s Atlantis! According to the greek philosopher, the mythical island would be located beyound the then called “Pillars of Hercules”, refering to the strait between Sicily and Tunisia, not the strait of Gibraltar, between Spain and Africa, as it was commonly supposed from the third century BC onwards.
Archaeological evidence suggests that Sardinia was home to a powerful maritime civilisation that was destroyed by a huge tidal wave circa 1200 B.C. Earthquakes and tidal waves were not that uncommon in the Mediterranean. Since 2004 scientists have identified 350 events of this type in a 2,500-year period. The sardinian catastrophe is described in inscriptions found in the mortuary temple of Ramesees III and also in the Old Testament. The Book of Ezekiel refers to the destruction of the port of Tharrus in these words: “Who is like Tyre, Like her who is silent in the midst of the sea? When your wares went out from the seas, You satisfied many peoples; With the abundance of your wealth and your merchandise You enriched the kings of earth. Now that you are broken by the seas In the depths of the waters, Your merchandise and all your company Have fallen in the midst of you. All the inhabitants of the coastlands Are appalled at you, And their kings are horribly afraid; They are troubled in countenance. The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; You have become terrified And you will cease to be forever.”
